It matters because the parts are interdependent: gearing changes the chain length needed, pitch has to match across all three components, and the joining link is what actually holds the whole thing together.

A clip link is held by a sprung clip pushed over the pin ends. It goes on with pliers and it comes off the same way, which is convenient and is why it is normal on small machines.

A rivet link is peened over with a chain tool and does not come off. On a machine with real power or real weight it is the only acceptable answer, and this kit does not carry one.
