A chain kit is a chain and two sprockets sold together because they wear together, and fitting a new chain onto worn sprockets ruins the chain in a fraction of its life. The specification begins with two numbers that are not negotiable. Pitch — 520, 525, 530 and so on — is the distance between pins and the width of the rollers, and it is set by the machine. Link count is set by the machine and its gearing, and a chain can be shortened but not lengthened. Get either wrong and nothing fits. The sprocket side adds a bolt pattern and a tooth count, and changing the tooth count changes the gearing, which is a deliberate decision rather than a variation between brands. Then the property that separates chains at the same pitch: the sealing ring. A plain chain has no seals, is cheapest, and needs lubricating constantly. An O-ring chain traps grease between the pins and the bushes behind round-section seals. X-ring chains use a profiled seal that touches in two places, which makers publish as less drag and longer life. All three are real constructions with published names, and the difference is in maintenance frequency rather than in anything mysterious. Tensile strength is published in newtons or kilograms by most makers and is comparable within a pitch. The sprockets are read on material: steel lasts longest, aluminium is lighter and wears faster, and a hybrid rear sprocket is a compromise makers publish as such. Last, and easily overlooked: which joining link is supplied — a rivet link needs a tool, a clip link does not, and most makers publish which one is in the box.
