An air filter is fitted for the life of a service interval and then either thrown away or washed, and which of the two decides almost everything else about the product. A paper element is the original fitment on most road machines: it is inexpensive, it filters finely, and it is replaced rather than cleaned — water destroys it and so does oil. A foam element is usual on off-road machines, is washed in solvent, re-oiled and refitted, and has to be oiled or it filters almost nothing. A cotton gauze element sits between the two: it is washed with a specific cleaner, re-oiled with a specific oil, and sold as a lifetime part. The claims made for gauze filters are the reason this family needs care. Makers publish flow figures and this site reports them as published; what it does not do is turn a flow figure into a power claim, because that would be a measurement nobody here has made. What can be said plainly is the ownership arithmetic: a gauze filter costs several times a paper one and is reusable, so it repays itself over a number of services that the rider can calculate, and it requires a cleaning kit that is a separate purchase. The other published lines are simple. Fitment, by cross-reference, which is the only thing that makes a filter the right one. The service interval the machine's manufacturer specifies, which is where this site points rather than inventing its own. And whether the filter arrives pre-oiled, since a gauze filter fitted dry filters poorly.
